Ten of Adventist Health's adult ICUs recenly participated in a focused study with a goal of elimiating central-line associated bloodstream infections (CLA-BSIs). The study's goal was to identify the causal relationship between specific national nursing measures and BSI rates. Not only was the project designed to improve clinical outcomes but it also aimed to enhance the overall culture of safety. Significant efforts were made toward achieving the study goal of zero central line infections and the hospitals continue to use the study protocols. In addition, common practices learned from the ICUs also will be applied to other nursing units and clinical services throughout the hospitals.
