Joint Camp

Supporting you on your joint replacement journey

At Adventist Health Specialty Bakersfield, we believe that you are the most important member of your health care team. That’s why we developed our comprehensive Joint Camp program to guide you through everything you’ll need to know before and after a total hip or knee replacement.

These sessions help you feel more informed and confident about your procedure and lead to smoother recoveries, so you can get back to doing more of the activities you love most.

What to expect

Our free Joint Camp educational program takes place the week before your procedure and provides you the opportunity to speak directly with expert nurses who support joint replacement patients from pre-surgery through recovery.

Participants learn:

  • What to expect upon arrival at the hospital
  • What to expect before, during and after surgery
  • Anesthesia and pain control options during surgery
  • Therapy expectations before, during and after hospitalization
  • Pain management plans after discharge
  • Equipment needs

The Joint Camp Buddy Program

We know that when it comes to recovering from surgery, it helps to have a family member or loved one help support you. Our Joint Camp Buddy Program invites you to bring that individual along so they can learn more about your care plan before and after your procedure.

Anyone can be a buddy, just as long as they are committed to understanding your needs before and after your total hip or knee replacement.

Buddies are encouraged to actively participate in care plans by:

  • Attending all medical appointments
  • Being present before and after surgery
  • Participating in physical therapy
  • Spending time in the hospital
  • Helping you remember instructions given by the healthcare team
  • Assisting with home care after discharge, especially to avoid falls
