Adventist Health Portland Doctors Named Top in Portland by Peers

A gastroenterologist and a family medicine doctor, both practicing at Adventist Health Portland, have been nominated by colleagues and recognized in Portland Monthly’s 2024 list of top medical providers.

“It is especially rewarding to be named top doctor as I changed practices recently,” says one of the honorees, gastroenterologist Michael Owens, MD. “The top doctor award is a vote by peers, which also makes winning this year particularly special. My two fantastic colleagues, Dr. Richard Brandes and Dr. Ginger deGravelle, are brand-new to Portland, and I am confident that, as the community of providers gets to know all of the gastroenterology team at Adventist Health Portland, we will see increasing recognition in this survey.”

Dr. Owens takes special interest in developing new treatments and devices. Driven to provide excellence in health care, he consistently receives positive reviews, especially for the way he takes time to explain the GI system in a manner that makes sense to patients.

Emily Cupp Bier, MD, part of the primary care team at the Gresham-Troutdale clinic, is also being recognized in Portland Monthly’s 2024 list of top medical providers. Specializing in family medicine, Dr. Bier provides expertise in women’s health, pediatrics and juggling health and wellness in today’s busy world of family and career commitments. Dr. Bier earns high marks in categories like showing care and concern, discussing treatment options, and including patients in health decisions.

“Having four daughters of my own gives me compassion in addressing the health concerns of my patients and their families,” Dr. Bier says.

To be included in the 2024 list of top medical providers, both Drs. Owens and Bier were nominated by colleagues in a survey conducted by Portland Monthly and the Professional Research Services company. Voters submitted names of their most esteemed peers, considering factors like experience, competency, patient satisfaction, and how providers work with other specialists to deliver the best care.
