Adventist Health Portland announced the 2024 nursing award recipients during a reception with hospital leaders, co-workers and friends.

Nurse of the Year

The emergency department’s Kris Bumpus, RN, has been named the Adventist Health Portland 2024 Nurse of the Year. This annual award is presented to a nurse who is identified by their peers for excellence not only in fulfilling their job responsibilities, but through a commitment to support their team and demonstration of the Adventist Health mission through compassionate service of patients and peers.

Co-workers describe Kris as having exceptional knowledge, skill and expertise. Kris began his career as a paramedic, experience that continues to inform his career. “His experience as a medic allowed him to assist the provider in a successful emergency cricothyrotomy [to establish an airway], saving the patient’s life,” one co-worker shares. Kris’ team is confident he will continue to inspire others and improve outcomes for patients.

CNA of the Year

Adventist Health Portland named Annie McFarland, CNA, its CNA of the Year. Annie is part of the catheterization (cath) lab team. This award is given each year to an individual who demonstrates professional excellence, outstanding commitment to mission and a spirit of service through the course of their work.

Teammates describe Annie as a fast learner and always going above and beyond to support patients and her team. A co-worker tells about a patient whose family wasn’t available when the procedure was over. Annie stepped in to keep the patient company. “Her presence and talking to them helped keep the patient calm and comforted until their family returned,” Annie’s co-worker explains.

Welcoming, compassionate and caring, Annie lives the Adventist Health mission every day.

Rising Star

Estera Mitrik, RN, has earned the distinction of Adventist Health Portland 2023 Rising Star for her work as a new grad resident working with patients after surgery. This annual award is given to a nurse who embraces new challenges, seeks opportunities to add skills and experiences to their portfolio, and deeply embraces our mission and values.

“Estera lives Gods love every day,” says one of her teammates. “The energy she exudes allows each and every one of her patients to feel comfortable [and] cared for and sets a healing environment.”

As she as quickly gone from novice to more advanced competency, Estera has shown she is a rising star who will continue to make sure her patients get the best care, both physically and spiritually.
