Adventist Health Ukiah Valley achieved the prestigious five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the highest rating possible using data that evaluates outcomes, patient experience and process.

Every year, CMS assigns star ratings to hospitals in the country based on 46 hospital quality measures that are divided into five categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care.

Of nearly 5,000 U.S. hospitals evaluated, only about 8 percent earned the highest five-star rating. In total, there are 381 hospitals nationwide and only 47 hospitals in California that received five-star ratings for 2024. Adventist Health Ukiah Valley joins this elite group of high-performing hospitals in the country, along with sister hospital, Adventist Health Howard Memorial in Willits.

“This recognition is a testament to our team's hard work and reflects our relentless pursuit to improve the quality of care we provide. While this is a great recognition of our efforts, our team looks at every patient, every day an opportunity to improve and give the very best care and experience. We’re proud to earn this national recognition and even prouder because of what it means for our community. This prestigious award and hard-earned achievement would not have been possible without the remarkable dedication and commitment from each of our team members, those that provide care at the bedside and those that support them -- from nurses, physicians, pharmacists, housekeeping, facilities and many support departments,” explains David Leighton, administrator for Adventist Health Ukiah Valley.

Typically, CMS reviews up to three years of quality data before issuing a star rating. CMS ratings are a valuable tool for patients and their families, to help them make informed decisions about their care. In addition to patient experience, the organization also analyzed patient data on quality and safety metrics, including how the hospital protects patients from infections, preventing falls, and readmissions and more.

CMS is the federal agency that provides health coverage to more than 160 million people through Medicare, and Medicaid. Compared to 2023, CMS has awarded 102 fewer hospitals its five-star quality rating.
