The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation donates $1 million to bring advanced, state-of-the-art mammography technology to Adventist Health Castle

Adventist Health Castle announced it has added a new mammography system made possible through a $1 million donation from The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation. The latest model of the Hologic 3Dimensions™ Mammography System, considered the most advanced mammography technology available in the state, enhances the health system’s ability to provide premier breast cancer screening and diagnostic services.

“The introduction of the Hologic 3Dimensions™ Mammography System is a testament to our ongoing commitment to providing the latest advancements in medical technology and the highest standards of care to our community,” said Robert Smitson, Medical Officer and Operations Executive at Adventist Health Castle. “This advanced technology is a significant asset in our fight against breast cancer, and we are grateful to The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation for its generous support in making this possible.”

Compared to conventional 2D mammograms, the Hologic 3Dimensions™ Mammography System has a 65% higher detection rate for invasive breast cancers. The 3D imaging technology improves diagnostic accuracy for radiologists and includes the industry’s fastest tomosynthesis scan at 3.7 seconds, reducing the likelihood of patient motion and the need for retakes. Additionally, it provides a more comfortable patient experience with a curved compression surface that mirrors the natural breast shape and faster, quieter operation. The Hologic 3Dimensions™ Mammography System is FDA-approved as superior for women with dense breasts compared to 2D imaging alone.

"We are honored to support the advancement of women’s health and oncology services, with the aim to improve early detection and treatment outcomes for breast cancer, empowering women with the best possible tools for their health and well-being,” says Tertia Freas, Executive Director of The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation.

The mammography upgrade is part of Adventist Health Castle’s $6.2 million oncology services expansion project. This initiative aims to significantly expand access to comprehensive oncology services, state-of-the-art mammography, cancer screening and other diagnostic imaging for O‘ahu.

If you have concerns about breast health before age 40, please speak to your primary care provider for a referral. After age 40, it is recommended to have a mammogram every year, no referral needed. The Hologic 3Dimensions™ mammography exam is covered through insurance for most patients.
