Sonora Family Medicine Residency

Hanford Sonora Family Medicine Residency Rural Training Track

Adventist Health Sonora is thrilled to announce the accreditation of our Rural Training Track Family Medicine Residency Program!

The Graduate Medical Education Program in Sonora operates in partnership with Adventist Health’s existing Family Medicine Residency program in Hanford, California. Our first class of residents will begin their training in 2023 and spend their first year of residency in Hanford. While there, residents will experience a wide variety of clinical settings and complex pathology, with an emphasis on inpatient medicine, including pediatrics and obstetrics.

The second and third years of training will be spent in Sonora, a rural community set in the foothills of the Sierras, in California’s historic Gold Country. During these years, residents will build their clinical and patient care skills in the Adventist Health Rural Health clinic, as well as at the Adventist Health Sonora hospital where a full range of faculty, specialists and consultants are on hand to provide residents with a comprehensive experience designed to prepare them for careers caring for and addressing the unique challenges of rural communities. Residents will rotate through inpatient services in medicine, obstetrics, and surgery as well as outpatient experiences in pediatrics, women’s health, emergency department, orthopedics and sports medicine, geriatrics, and population health.

Adventist Health Sonora is proud to offer our community a range of advanced services which are rarely seen in rural settings. These include the Diana J. White Cancer Institute with medical oncology, radiation oncology and infusion services. We also provide an extensive orthopedics program with surgeons specializing in treatments for hand and upper extremities, sports medicine, and joint replacement, as well as an acclaimed spine surgery program designated by BlueCross BlueShield as a Blue Distinction Center. Our cardiac catheterization lab is undergoing extensive renovations and our heart care team is applying for certification to offer the first percutaneous coronary intervention program in the Sierra Nevada foothill region.

Adventist Health Sonora is continually exploring new ways to improve the overall wellness of our community while providing exceptional care for the patients and families we serve. The Graduate Medical Education Program will enhance the care and overall medical experience for our community while training the next generation of physicians who will become the innovative healthcare leaders of the future.

We are seeking applicants who are passionate about their medical training, devoted to caring for rural communities and recognize the value of work life balance. Sonora can offer it all: state of the art medical facilities, engaging faulty and an abundance of outdoor activities including proximity to Yosemite National Park. We invite you to learn more about our program. We look forward to meeting you!
