At Adventist Health Sonora, our primary care providers include family medicine physicians and resident physicians, internal medicine physicians, pediatricians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants who manage the care for each patient by providing regular exams and screenings, treating chronic and acute illnesses and coordinating additional care such as referrals to specialists when needed.

Addressing the primary care shortage

Rural communities across the Unites States are often at a disadvantage when it comes to accessing healthcare. One in five Americans live in rural communities, yet approximately 90% of physicians practice in more densely populated urban and suburban areas.

Adventist Health Sonora is working to buck the trend by training the next generation of healthcare providers right here in Sonora. The Hanford Sonora Family Medicine Residency Rural Training Track is an accredited graduate medical education program designed to provide its resident physicians with comprehensive training and guidance from faculty and specialists who are experts with real world experience in rural healthcare.

Each year, Sonora will welcome four new family medicine residents who have graduated from medical school and completed their first year of residency training at Adventist Health Hanford. The residents will participate in an additional two years of hands-on training in Sonora.

As part of their hands-on training, the family medicine residents provide primary care services for our community. Their patients benefit by receiving care from a resident physician with the most up-to-date training, as well as the attending physician – a supervising, fully-licensed and board-certified program faculty member.

Upon completing their training, many residents will take the knowledge they’ve gained in Sonora and move on to care for other rural communities. Some will choose to stay in our community and provide quality primary care services for many years to come. That is one way Adventist Health Sonora is working to address the healthcare needs of our community now and into the future.

The family medicine resident physicians highlighted below are accepting new patients with Medicare, Medi-Cal and most other health insurance plans.
